Dominique has been natural for all of her life. She decided to ditch the heat and embrace her natural curls years ago and on her journey she has had the opportunity to create a blog highlighting what's worked for her, collaborate with reputable brands (i.e. Revlon Realistic, Africa's Best, CurlBox, etc.), perform as a co-host on the natural hair series, "Kinky Conversations", and sit as a panelist and speaker on the Empowerment Stage at the 2019 CurlFest festival in New York City. She was also featured in Hype Hair Magazine and Curl Magazine where she shared her hair journey with the world.
Creating an app for women who were on their natural hair journey has been at the top of her mind for years! When she first started her "no heat" journey, she had no idea where to begin. Resources, advice, and products were scattered EVERYWHERE. Dominique saw this as an opportunity to create an experience, centered around Curl Type, making it easier for women to begin and/or continue their natural hair journey with ease while feeling connected with those on similar journeys.
"It's difficult enough to embrace your natural hair when the world around you doesn't accept it. It's also difficult when you were never taught how to really care for your natural hair. Creating CRWND was an opportunity to do the heavy lifting for the community. I wanted to create a space that made embracing your natural hair less cumbersome and confusing.
Early on in my journey, I found myself thinking my hair was supposed to curl up like other women and part of that was because I didn't know my curl type AND I didn't know what to search for to find women styling and caring for curls that looked like mine (REPRESENTATION MATTERS). All of these factors led to me damaging my hair. I stuck with it, but I didn't necessarily LOVE what I saw in the process. It took consistency, finding the right youtubers, finding the right products - LOTS of trial and error - and it became a lot of work.
CRWND addresses those gaps. The platform provides a curl type specific experience where all of your tutorials, products and even forums are curated by curl type - making the journey more enjoyable and easier to navigate! This is something I would have wanted, and based on the years of questions I received about my own journey, I realized wasn't the only one with this need. The community needed a central place to feel seen, understood, and gain access to an organized experience with specific resources to help them embrace their natural hair - leading them to a deeper sense of self love and acceptance!"
